Temel Yılmaz

Prof. Dr. M. Temel Yılmaz graduated from Cerrahpaşa Medical School in 1976, becoming assistant professor and professor in 1987 and 2003 respectively.

He has been the head of division of diabetes of Istanbul Medical Faculty between the years 1994-2004 and the Department of Immunology of Institute for Experimental Medicine of Istanbul University between the years 1994-2004.

He is currently an active faculty member at the division of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Istanbul Medical Faculty and he is the director of  İstanbul University Diabetes Application and Research Center.

Prof. Dr. Temel Yılmaz is also founding member and current President of Turkish Diabetes Foundation.

Between the years of 2000-2008, he coordinated Southeastern Anatolian Diabetes Project (GAPDIAB) with participation of more than 30 stakeholders including professional and non-governmental organizations, as well as universities from the region.

During the years of 2009-2016, with the endorsement of Ministry of Health and support from International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization, he initiated “Diabetes 2020: Turkey Vision and Targets” Project, which also became baseline for National Diabetes Program, as well as an example for other programs about managing chronic diseases.

He is currenty coordinating “Diabetes Peer Education” program, which is a sub module of “Stop Diabetes” Initiative during the years of 2011-2015, with endorsement of Presidency of Turkish Republic.

For his work in the field of diabetes, Prof. Yılmaz received many awards such as Eczacıbaşı Medical Incentive Award, International Lions Service Award, Istanbul University Scientific Publication Award and in 2015 he was finally awarded as physician of the year by International Diabetes Federation. 

He has more than 350 publications and he is in the Editorial Board of books and journals in the field of Diabetes.
